Como Casa Europa y miembros de la European Alliance of Academies, desde el Círculo de Bellas Artes nos sumamos al comunicado realizado por Cécile Wajsbrot, autora y miembro de la European Alliance of Academies, en el que resume las preocupaciones de los miembros de la Alianza ante la situación del arte y la cultura en Hungría.

El Mathias Corvinus Collegium, fundado en 1996 como una universidad privada de arte y ciencias sociales, se ha convertido a lo largo de los años en una institución cuyo objetivo es el de alentar e instruir a la élite de la sociedad de Orbán, además de ayudar a crear una red internacional de fuerzas de derecha y extrema derecha en Europa. El pasado mes de mayo, la MCC compró el 90% de las acciones de la Universidad privada Modul de Viena. El comunicado ofrecido por MCC alegaba que, dicho acto no tendría repercusiones sobre los planes de estudios o académicos de la universidad, no obstante en Kahlenberg, territorio vienés en el que se encuentra la Universidad de Modul, han comenzado a mostrar su preocupación por el futuro del centro.

Hace dos semanas, la misma MCC ha adquirido una participación del 98,41% en Libri, que es, junto con Lirà, uno de los dos principales actores del panorama editorial húngaro. MCC ya había adquirido el 25,4% de Libri en 2020, suficiente para bloquear decisiones. Libri, además de otras editoriales comerciales de gran prestigio ,con autores como Péter Nádas, Colm Tóibín o Carlo Rovelli, posee unas sesenta librerías por toda Hungría. A pesar de las garantías, algunos autores ya informaron que abandonarían Libri. Por el contrario, la Unión de Escritores Húngaros acogió con satisfacción la noticia.

Ahora el Parlamento está considerando un nuevo conjunto de restricciones para disminuir la autonomía profesional de los docentes en respuesta a sus demandas de salarios más altos y menor centralización.

Todos sabemos o deberíamos saber cómo funciona. Al principio, los dictadores tienden a ofrecer una cara más bien amistosa. Pero en el secreto de las oficinas y departamentos, están preparando cuidadosamente los próximos ataques contra todo tipo de libertad: educación, arte, cultura. Y luego, o antes, muestran sus verdaderos rostros. Esto que ha sucedido en Hungría y está pasando también en Polonia, está comenzando a gestarse también en Italia. ¿Quién será el siguiente en la fila?

Recién llegada de Budapest y con su próximo destino ya fijado en Cracovia, la European Alliance of Academies quiere expresar su gran preocupación por el aumento de las agresiones contra la libertad de expresión y de creación en Europa, haciendo especial énfasis en aquellas que se llevan a cabo de forma encubierta, sin demasiado ruido y sin demasiada publicidad.

Cécile Wajsbrot, author and member of the European Alliance of Academies, summarises the concerns of Alliance members about the situation for art and culture in Hungary.

The Mathias Corvinus Collegium – originally founded in 1996 as a private university for art and social sciences – has over the years become an institution to shape the elite of Orbán’s society as well as helping to create an international network of right and far-right forces in Europe. Last May the MCC bought 90% shares of the private Modul University in Vienna. It will not infer with the University curricula or academics, was the announcement from MCC. But on the Kahlenberg, where the university is located, many were concerned about the future.

Two weeks ago, the same MCC has acquired a 98,41% stake in Libri, which is, along with Lirà, one of the two main players in the Hungarian publishing landscape. The MCC had already acquired 25,4% of Libri in 2020, enough to block decisions. Libri, as well as other commercial or most prestigious publishing houses featuring authors such as Péter Nádas, Colm Tóibín or Carlo Rovelli, possesses about sixty bookstores all over Hungary. Despite reassurances, a few authors already informed they would step out from Libri. The very official Hungarian Writers’ Union on the contrary welcomed the news.

And now the Parliament is considering a new set of restrictions in order to diminish professional autonomy for teachers in response to their demands for higher wages and reduced centralization.

We all know or should know how it works. At the beginning, dictators tends to offer a rather friendly face. But in the secrecy of offices and departments, they are carefully preparing the coming assaults against every kind of freedom – education, art, culture. And they later or earlier show their true faces. This has happened in Hungary, it is happening now in Poland, it is beginning to happen in Italy. Who will be the next in line?

Having just come back from Budapest, going soon to Cracow, the European Alliance of Academies wants to express its great concern about increasing aggressions against freedom of expression and creation in Europe, all the more as it happens under cover – without too much noise, without too much publicity.
